Welcome to Day 3, the last(ish) day of the Everyday Folklore 3 Day Challenge!
Today is St Crispin’s Day. Along with his everso-slightly-matchingly-named brother, St Crispinian, the pair oversee patronage of shoemakers and cobblers. And in celebration of this beneficence, today is traditionally the day for those in the trade to get jovial, leading to this handy little reminder:
The twenty-fifth of October
Cursed be the cobbler
That goes to bed sober.
Now, while the above could stand as your instruction for today, far be it from me to suggest you just crack open a tinny and call it job done. No, to warrant your libation, you will need to earn your shoemaker status, hence the shoe polish and/or elbow grease and rag requirement. Go forth my fellow folklorists and get buffing and unscuffing* and then you can raise your glass (or your mug of tea) to all cobblers and their saintly patrons. And also to yourselves for completing (almost) the Everyday Folklore 3 Day Challenge! And for having clean shoes! It’s a win win all round!
See you back here later for the almost final round up and if you have any questions, leave a comment below!
*Unfortunately as today proves, not all folklore is glamorous. But if you can clean your shoes while giving the St Crispin’s Day speech from Shakespeare’s Henry V, that’s double folklore points… We few, we happy few, we band of brothers folklorists...
Also, don’t forget to keep plucking your divinatory bay leaves every morning! Slàinte!
