1 February 2020 – St Brigid’s Day

1 February 2020 – St Brigid’s Day

Bit of a mish mash today as I couldn’t quite get my act together.

Firstly, I forgot to say White Rabbits, or any variation thereof. So that’s my luck buggered for the month.

Secondly, I wound in my Bratog bride from yesterday. I hadn’t gone for the traditional white, I’d used a purple ribbon instead as amethyst is the gemstone for February, plus the only white material I had was a tea towel sporting a pink Agatha Christie quote, or some fun fur I’d used to make fake mutton chops, neither of which felt appropriate. The ribbon is now placed somewhere safe ready to be whipped out should a migraine or sore throat descend.

Thirdly, I had a look at the weather because of the Cailleach. The Cailleach is a one eyed, old crone who rules winter, has a storm wielding hammer, and on 1 February, likes to predict the weather. Think Groundhog Day but with an Ena Sharples/Chris Hemsworth chimera. If the weather is good, that means the Cailleach has woozled the sun into shining so she can go out and collect more firewood and therefore the winter is marked to continue, but if it’s overcast, she’s overslept and winter will be shorter. I don’t know about you, but the sun was kind of dazzling where I was.

And fourthly, I had a bit of a bop. This is a me tradition. Whenever I feel sad or out of sorts, I like to put on some music and bust out some moves. And for reasons various, I felt sad today. So I started with the classic Play That Funky Music by Black Cherry, followed by The Theme From Shaft, Isaac Hayes, finishing with a James Brown twofer of Sex Machine and I Got You. And while the reasons for the sadness remain, the dancing endorphins help a lot. So if today you’re feeling a little down too, here is my F*ck You Blues playlist (feel free to add to it in the comments):

  1. Night Fever – The Bee Gees
  2. The Hustle – Van McCoy & The Soul City Symphony
  3. Got To Give It Up – Marvin Gaye
  4. Theme From Starsky and Hutch – The James Taylor Quartet
  5. Pick Up The Pieces – Average White Band
  6. I Can’t Get Close To You – The Temptations
  7. For Once In My Life – Stevie Wonder
  8. One Step Beyond – Madness
  9. Don’t Stop Me Now – Queen
  10. Holding Out For a Hero – Bonnie Tyler
  11. Ace of Spades – Motörhead
  12. Dizzy – Vic Reeves and The Wonder Stuff

I also penned February’s #FolkloreFOMO post – there’s a poll at the end about pancake toppings given that Shrove Tuesday is coming up. Is lemon juice and sugar really going to beat cheese? I mean, really…?
