27 October 2020 – Magic Trick

I learnt three things today:

One:     A magic trick
Two:     I have no magician game, and
Three:  According to my audience, I should have been wearing a cat suit and/or Playboy bunny costume to perform in

It was a tough crowd.

The trick was called the Penacoin and involved me pushing a coin through a sheet of rubber pulled taut over a glass. I shan’t tell you how it’s done because that’s cheating. But here is a video of me doing a dress rehearsal:

See Two above.

Then it was on to my debut performance as a magician. I say debut, I used to do a card trick when I was younger, but I cannot for the life of me remember how to do it. And I also played Tinkerbell in several magical guises as an Assistant Stage Manager at the West Yorkshire Playhouse during two years on Peter Pan. But this was the first non-card, non-theatrical-wizardry trick I’d performed.

See Three above.

Feedback included, where is Debbie McGee, where is the lovely Debbie McGee, what first attracted you to millionaire, Paul Daniels, am I going to be like the Great Suprendo, and I should wave my hands around more.

Like I said, it was a tough crowd. Luckily I’ve known them for 37 years, so it was all in jest. I think.

But the best fun about this trick was actually talking to the man in the magic shop when I bought it. He kept showing me all sorts of sleight of hand which I found utterly charming. I’ve always wanted to know how things work, but there really is something quite glorious about having to use your imagination instead.

I really don’t remember this video being so readers’ wives.

If you’d sawed something in half that would have been impressive. You have a cat don’t you?…

I particularly like the reveal of the leopard print headband in the abracadabra video! Generally I think it’s aged well
