16 August 2020 – World Letter Writing Day Opportunity

Okay, so here’s the craic. On 1 September 2020, it’s World Letter Writing Day, and as part of The Everyday Lore Project, I want to write a postcard to five people. I’d write more but there’s Other Life and my general level of Lawrence to consider. So if you want to be one of the five people I write to, here’s what you’ll need to do:

  1. If you’re not already subscribed to my blog, sign up by 8.00am BST on 1 September 2020. Obviously you can unsubscribe at any time (although not before 2 September 2020 to be eligible) but it would be great if you stuck around for the last couple of months of the project
  2. Once subscribed, click here and fill out the following (you’ll need to use the same email you used to subscribe):
    • Your full name (and nickname if applicable)
    • Your full postal address, including country
    • A folklore topic you’d like me to write to you about (bear in mind, this will be a postcard not an essay, and if you’re inappropriate I’ll disqualify you)
  3. If you’re picked and receive a postcard let me know by tagging me in on social media and using the hashtag #EverydayLore, or dropping me an email

On 1 September, I’ll put everyone’s name into a hat and draw out five. Once I’ve written to everyone, I will delete all the submissions so I will no longer have anyone’s postal address on file.

If you can’t think of anything folkloric to ask me about, by the end of August, I will have written nearly nine months of daily posts about the ritual year, traditions, superstitions, the weather, food, plants, material culture and the like, just pop a date in the search box and see what comes up, it might inspire you.

It doesn’t matter where in the world you are, if you want to receive a postcard written on World Letter Writing Day, sign up, submit, sit back and keep your fingers crossed… If you have any questions, drop me a line.

You have no idea how much I wanted to title this post: Captain’s Log: Supplemental, given it’s my second post today, but it’s not Star Trek Day until 8 September.
