15 September 2020 – Six Years Out Of Seven

15 September 2020 – Six Years Out Of Seven

There’s a strange bit of weatherlore today, for according to Maypoles, Martyrs & Mayhem, it’s said that September 15th ‘will be fine, six years out of seven’ (p.261). I can’t seem to find this anywhere else other than on websites practicing some pretty obvious plagiarism (with one also being massively racist). But I thought I’d look at the claim anyway, given how sunny today was.

A quick internet search showed that it has been ‘mostly sunny’ around my parts with temperatures between 81o and 63o since 2015, when the weather changed to ‘mostly cloudy’. Therefore by my reckoning, if 2015 was Year One, then 2020 would be Year Six and still within the six out of seven year span. So folklore for the win.

But because this year wasn’t the seventh in the cycle, I decided to go back further. 2014 was also cloudy, making it Year One going backwards. 2013: 61o, mostly sunny; 2012: 70o, mostly sunny; 2011: 66o, mostly sunny; and then I started to get excited, Year Five 2010: 63o, mostly sunny; but then Year Six, 2009: 61o, mostly cloudy, with Year Seven, 2008: 63o being mostly sunny again. Pants. So close. Having said that, it hasn’t actually rained on 15 September in all that time, so maybe that’s a better metric to bet against.

Also, totally called it with the school starting equals heatwave tradition. I shall now sit in smug sweatiness until the weather breaks. Which maybe some time given the weatherlore yesterday was:

If the hart and the hind meet dry and part dry on Rood Day fair
For sax weeks, of rain there’ll be nae mair.

Mind you, I shouldn’t get too excited, that bit of folklore only lasted seven days last year, and three the year before. I’ll leave you to check the rest.
